Tools Through Delivery

Tools are the last decision, not the first. Once your story, capture and edit plan are clear, you can see exactly which link in the chain is weak, and spend money only there. Then deliver the finished story in the shape each audience will actually see.

Tools 02 · Signal chains

Signal chains that stay simple

A signal chain is the path your image or sound travels from source to file. Quality is limited by the weakest link, so short chains with fewer adapters fail less often.

Video chain

  1. Light
  2. Lens
  3. Sensor
  4. Codec
  5. Card
  6. Drive

Voice chain

  1. Room
  2. Mic
  3. XLR
  4. Interface
  5. DAW

Notice the first link in both chains: light and room. Improving them costs little and improves everything after. A DAW (digital audio workstation) such as Audacity or Reaper is where you record and edit sound.

Tools 04 · Delivery

Deliver for the format

Separate two kinds of file. Intermediate codecs such as Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR are large but easy to edit and survive re-exporting. Delivery codecs such as H.264, HEVC (H.265) and AV1 are small and efficient for viewing. Export one high-quality master, then make every delivery version from it.
